Let’s Talk About Play: The Surprising Way One Painting Came to Life October 10, 2024

So, when was the last time you really played? Not in a “gotta get stuff done” kind of way, but in a “who cares what happens, let’s have some fun” kind of way? As a painter, I sometimes forget that play is where creativity really takes off. But recently, I got a joyful reminder that playing isn’t just for kids—it can be the secret ingredient to amazing things!

It All Started with My Goddaughter

A few days ago, my 11-year-old goddaughter swung by the studio. I wasn’t planning to stay long, but her excitement was contagious. So, I grabbed my sketchbook and, in a totally spontaneous moment, we decided to paint flowers. No pressure, no rules—just splashes of color, laughter, and fun.

We started with some simple strokes, and before I knew it, we were throwing around wild ideas and letting our imaginations run wild. Honestly, it was one of those rare moments where everything felt light and easy, and the creative energy just flowed.

 

A Flash of Inspiration

While we were busy laughing and painting, something caught my eye—a canvas I had painted back in 2015 or 2016. It was a nude portrait that had been sitting in the corner of my studio, waiting for its moment to shine. Suddenly, an idea hit me—what if I combined the flowers we were working on with the old portrait?

It might sound crazy, but that’s when the real magic happened. I didn’t think twice. I just went for it, blending the playful flowers with the more serious, elegant portrait. It was like two different worlds coming together on the canvas—past and present, fun and formality. And guess what? It worked!

Creativity Meets Playtime

This whole experience reminded me of something so important: creativity doesn’t have to be serious. In fact, some of the best ideas come when we’re just playing around, letting go of the outcome. It’s all about the process, not the result. And that’s exactly what this painting became—a perfect mix of structured, thoughtful art and carefree, let’s-see-what-happens fun.

It’s kind of like life, right? We carry our past with us, but we’re always adding new layers, new experiences. And sometimes, it’s in those playful moments that the best stuff comes out.

A Decade in the Making (Kind Of)

Okay, so this painting may have started years ago, but it didn’t really come to life until that playful afternoon with my goddaughter. And now, it’s a piece that represents so much more to me—an unexpected journey that brought two different creative moments together in one beautiful, joyful way.
